Finished games

Post  Scarlatti on Mon Aug 23, 2010 8:30 am

So far, I was able to finish some games using Pix's Windows builds and soundtracks, the latest being Space Quest III. It played wonderfully, no problems noted. I tried Amon Ra with previously saved games, and it seems to be working fine as well. Tunes overlap in some rooms, but I think that either the original played that way, or it's a problem with the main ScummVM code. I'll play the LSL1 VGA remake with the soundtrack when it's released in the next days.

Seems to me that, at this pace, Pix will eventually release soundtracks for all the available games. Smile

I'll have a look at Dagger Of Amon Ra some time. I noticed a problem with the adlib sound for the guy snoring outside the police station still playing which I need to investigate. You are probably right about the overlapping music being an issue in the official build, there were similar problems with KQ5 at one stage.

You won't have long to wait for LSL1. There was a major problem with CD Audio in SVN for the builds I did yesterday so I'm having to do redo them. I'll edit the soundtrack while it's running so it will be done tonight.

The plan is certainly to do every game but my enthusiasm might wane by the time I get to the likes of Mixed Up Mother Goose.

I just finished Code Name: Iceman yesterday with the Windows Build. The timing bug issues are still there to a degree and the boss dice game is as irritating as ever, but the game was completeable. The music was pretty stable for the most part although in a few spots, the music cut out when I saved a game and only came back when I either saved or loaded a game again. Otherwise, no complaints.

Next on my playlist is Conquests of Camelot.

Re: Finished Games (Conquests of Camelot)

Post  Megane67 on Tue Aug 24, 2010 12:47 pm

Okay, I just finished Conquests of Camelot and I may have found an important fix for the music in the game. I'll explain...

When I first started the game, the opening theme would only play in Adlib. I searched the OGG files and found track201 had the same opening theme music. So I copied it, renamed the file track1 and when I tried it again, it worked.

Then I watched the introduction and the music cut out completely when the Round Table arrived and only came back when Merlin appeared in the crystal ball. I knew a few music pieces were missing and confirmed it by checking out a Let's Play of the game on YouTube. So I used SCIViewer to look at the sound files and discovered that some of the OGG files were numbered for files only meant to be played by Ad-Lib/Soundblaster (I tried changing the ScummVM settings to Adlib/Soundblaster to see if they would play the OGG and they didn't.)

So I renamed the missing files identified by SCIViewer (ie. 227 to 27, 308 to 108, etc), and by doing so, I was able to get the missing music and sound effect OGGs to work.

I've made a list of all the files I renamed which I've included here, hopefully Pix can confirm whether or not this should work for everyone else as well or whether this problem is exclusive to me and my computer for whatever reason:

track201 to track1, track204 to track4, track219 to track19, track227 to track27
track229-230 to track29-30, track239 to track39, track241-245 to track41-45
track249-54 to track49-54, track256-57 to track56-57, track265 to track65
track273 to track73, track278-84 to track78-84, track287 to track87
track289-90 to track89-90, track305-06 to track105-06, track308 to track108
track311 to track111, track322 to track122

Anyway, after I did this, the game played almost flawlessly for me from beginning to end, no music cut out even when saving and loading games. There were two minor animation glitches, but no crashes thankfully. I think I'll play the Leisure Suit Larry series next now that the LSL1 VGA soundtrack is released. Smile

I think you might have an old version of the oggs. Right back when I first started adding these soundtracks the official build kept changing which track number I needed to play between the two sets. I must have changed Conquest of Camelot backwards and forwards 3 or 4 times. The one on my hard disk is ok but I'll download the rar from here now and double check it.

EDIT
I've checked now and the oggs on the website have already been renamed in the way you describe. Looking at the date on the rar file, they haven't been changed since I moved onto this webserver back in January so the set you are using must be from a long time back.

Just finished Larry 3. It works fine, but sometimes the music stops after typing something, and then starts playing again when entering something else in the parser. Also, music and sound effects don't play at the same time, but I think it's a limitation of the MT-32 implementation and of the original hardware. Still, it's a bit weird when Larry sharpens the knife and the sound keeps alternating between the theme and sharpening noise in short intervals.

All SCI0 games can only play one sound at a time, even including effects so that much is normal. I can't reproduce the knife sharpening problem, the music doesn't kick in again until he is done sharpening for me. I even tried slowing the game right down to give it more chance for the music to start up again. Are you using the latest build and does it have the same problem using adlib sound?

It only happens when using the adlib driver, instead of MT-32. Your latest distribution have some savegames and other extra files included... Did you forget to remove them, or it's part of the package? drunken

The extra files weren't intentional. I'd noticed but not got around to removing them. I guess I should get that done today.

I've reproduced the problem now. There might not be a lot I can do about it but I'll take a look. I'm reliant on the SCI engine to say when to pause and unpause the music, it's strange that it behaves differently with adlib. It's nothing major anyway and can be solved in Windows at least by setting your sound to MIDI. Won't help on the PSP though where it isn't a option. I could force the engine to always use MIDI like I did with Loom but I'd rather not resort to that sort of hack if I can avoid it.

Lands of Lore CD (big trouble!)

Post  MAN-biker on Thu Sep 30, 2010 4:08 pm

Game hangs up when i found 4th party member (Lora). I found her, she say something like "I will wait you outside this chamber...", but when I try to exit this location, using [EXIT] button, i see only 3 characters (as i remember, Lora must join my party as 4th member), and the game hangs up. The same at PSP and Windows versions. Crying or Very sad

P.S.: By the way, "LoL controls" did not work again

Something must have changed in the main code to break the LOL controls. I don't expect it will take much fixing, I'll have a look over the weekend. I was hoping it would make it to the official build to avoid exactly this sort of thing. I submitted a patch over a month back, I was expecting to hear something by now even if it was just a rejection.

As for the game crashing, you could try it on the official overnight build (you will need to get the 1.3 version as 1.2 is in testing and doesn't include Lands Of Lore support) and if it crashes there as well it should probably be reported as a bug. If it doesn't then it's either something I've broken or it's been fixed since the last build. If you send me a savegame, I can take a look at it.

Can you give me direct link to latest official build with LoL support enabled?

You can get the latest overnight build from http://buildbot.scummvm.org/snapshots/trunk/mingw-w32-trunk-latest.tar.bz2

I've given it a go with your savegame and it's a problem that's in the official build also. The crash is something to do with adding the extra character by the looks of it. I'm never sure whether the developers want to receive bug reports on games that are in development or not but it would probably get fixed sooner if you report it using the bugtracker (assuming it's not already in there).

I think that Lands of Lore is not officially supported yet. It'll be when the 1.3.0 branch is released on a stable build. Until then, i don't know if they will fix any reported bugs. Sad

Looks like they don't accept bug reports until the game is in testing although it won't have hurt to have got it reported. My understanding was that the CD version was supposed to be more or less finished and it was just the floppy version that still needed work so I expect it came as news. Hopefully you should be able to pick up where you left off when it is fixed, but I'd expect a long wait.

I'm not sure what is going on with the LOL controls. You should be able to at least use them now but there is no good reason why they won't change back to normal control mode, at least that I can see. If they are still an issue when LOL goes into testing then I'll have another look but I'm expecting the problem to "fix itself" before then.
