Help with OPL recording of music

Post  SimSaw on Sun Aug 24, 2014 6:07 am

Hi Pix,

it's been a while since my last post. Sorry for that. I remember some time ago you told me you could help me recording OPL music, but your soundcard was broken. Have you had the chance meanwhile to buy a new one? It would be great if you could help me as I would like to use the OPL soundtrack inside ScummVM. My old 486 computer furthermore had noise when I recorded music from it, so a complete new recording with your equipment might be favourable. Would you like to help me or would it be too much work?

I'm struggling for time these days but I reckon I can probably sort this out. I take it you would just need me to go through each of the sound files playing each track one by one? Provided you do all the editing that shouldn't be a big job.

The AWE32 in my DOS PC is OPL3 so I guess I'd use that and record it through the other machine. I'd need to check if I can play the files back on there from DOS before I can promise anything.

Yes, I just need the recordings. All the editing I can do myself. I need them two times in a row plus about 15 seconds for the third playback (so that I can arrange a proper loop). For Simon 1 floppy disk version, you'd just need to overwrite the MOD7.MUS of the floppy disk version everytime, so you can record all the tracks from the beginning of the game.

AWE32? Hasn't that one had an EMU8000 chip already instead of an OPL3 chip?

Before you do that for all the tracks, please make a test recording for me.

I remember that OPL3 had always light background noise for me. Do you have a way to record it without that?

Thank you for your help in advance!

The AWE32 has an EMU8000 and an OPL3. As for the sound quality I'd have to try it to find out, the AWE32 isn't exactly famous for having the cleanest signal but it's the only OPL3 card I've got. What software can I use to play those MUS files (preferably in DOS)? I've tried Musplay but that wasn't working with whatever format STS is using.

I guess it will only work starting the original game. The thing is that the game uses the MT_FM.IBK to match the instruments. As far as I know Winamp was able to playback the MUS file, but too fast and not all of them.

Sorry but if I have to play them through the game then it's going to take way more time than I'm willing to spend on this. If you can find a means to play the music outside of the game then I could give it a go. To see if that's actually worth it I have done a brief test recording at http://www.pixsoriginadventures.co.uk/simon2test.flac . That's recording into my motherboard instead of my soundcard so I could improve on the quality a little but it should give you the idea.

I see. Thank you for that demo! I see your Sound Blaster also has background noise issues, so maybe you don't need to bother at all.

Someone at the DOSBox forums told me that in an earlier verison it was possible to play OPL3 music through a native Sound Blaster. Do you know anything about this?

No, the only game I ever preferred the adlib to MT-32 soundtrack was Dune so it's not something I've ever looked into. You'd need a machine with an ISA slot to plug in the Sound Blaster wouldn't you? If I was using a PC that old, I'd just get it to dual boot into DOS and skip DOSBox.

Thanks! I indeed might need to do that.

By the way, I found this:
http://www.shikadi.net/moddingwiki/IBK_Format

Would this help in order to playback with correct instruments?

Could you check this out?
http://www.adlibtracker.net/downloads.php

There you find the download "AT2 w/ DOSBox (HW)" which is a DOSBox with support for OPL3 hardware playback. Could you make me an example recording? (Be sure to press 'm' before the recording, so that I can hear the silence at the beginning of the recording.)

It would be great if this actually worked!
